Back to School Safety Tips Every Child Should Know

1. Always cross the street at crosswalks.
Because children are short, a car may not see them when speeding down the street. Always make sure your child knows to cross only at designated cross walks when the light or crossing guard directs them to. This way all traffic is yielded to them.

2. Obey the bus rules, especially the arm guard rules.
Go over the bus rules such as staying in your seat and using inside voices. Be sure to stress that no one should ever walk in front of a bus when the arm guard is down since the driver will not be able to see them and they risk being hit.

3. Remind them about strangers.
Not all strangers are bad, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Remind your child to never talk to strangers, and never accept a ride from a stranger EVER. Remind them that people may try to fool them into getting in the car, but that you will never authorize a stranger to come pick them up. Pick a code word you can use in the event that you send another person to come and get them.

4. Review important phone numbers.
If your child will be home alone be sure to go over important phone numbers for the police station, fire station, 911, non-emergency numbers, and numbers to a neighbor nearby who can help if there is a problem.

5. Remind them who they can trust.
Reassure them that there are people they can come talk to when scared. Parents of friends, teachers, school staff, a trusted neighbor, etc. are all helpful should a scary situation arise.

Here’s an important update on fraudulent claims activity happening in your area. We’ve noticed a growing trend of insurance claims for “hail damage”. Roofing companies are targeting neighborhoods with older roofs saying that a hail storm had come through, some referring to hail storms that happened years ago. They’re going door-to-door stating that residents have hail damage to their roof and that their roof needs to be replaced, and that they would handle everything for you, even deal with your insurance company.

New roof, minimal out-of-pocket costs, no dealing with insurance companies. Sounds too good to be true, right?

That’s because it is. In most cases like these, an “Assignment of Benefits” is involved.

What is Assignment of Benefits?

When you sign a contract that includes an Assignment of Benefits, you’re essentially transferring and assigning any and all insurance rights, benefits, and causes of action under your property insurance policy to the contractor. Assignment of Benefits is not exclusive to hail claims, but that’s what we’ve seen the most and we urge you to be informed. Always talk with your insurance agent or company before signing a contract that includes an “Assignment of Benefits”.

When filing a Hail Claim, the hail damage must result in 25% or more of the damage to your roof for the claim to even be a valid loss due to hail. Anything less will most likely result in a declination by your carrier, but even if it’s denied and your insurance company deems that your roof needs to be replaced due to age and you’ve signed an Assignment of Benefits, the roofing company calls all the shots and in the end gets the job replacing your roof, regardless of whether or not you want them working on your home or not.

If a roofing company knocks on your door and claims that you have hail damage and that your roof needs to be replaced, here are a few things to look for on your own before you take any further action:

• Cars: Are/were any cars damaged as a result of the hail storm?

• Gutters: Look for dents in the rain gutters around your home.

• Screened Patios: Look for holes in your screen and dents in the metal supports.

• Mailboxes: Look for dents on your mailbox; check your neighbor’s mailboxes too.

• AC Units: Check for multiple dents to your AC enclosure.

• Leaks: Are there any leaks in the ceiling throughout your home or in your garage?

How much does life insurance cost? The better question is can your family afford to not have life insurance? At the Most Insurance Agency we are truly passionate about protecting families and that begins with life insurance.

Life Insurance can seem like a pretty scary or morbid topic, but it really shouldn’t be. I recently explained in a super short video Life Insurance truly is love Insurance. I ask and answer the question, “why someone should get life insurance? If you love someone, you should get life insurance.” Until I got married I personally never really thought about life insurance, but once I was married I wanted to make sure that if I died my wife Jacqie would be taken care of, and even more now that we have adopted Hudson, if I was to die, I want them taken care of.  I purchased enough to pay off our home, and to replace my income, so she didn’t have to worry about selling our house, and moving.

Most people who do not have life insurance assume it costs too much, but that is not the case at all. Even if you cannot afford a large life insurance policy something is better than nothing!

Recently I wrote a policy on a single father. He had a nine-year-old son and wanted to make sure the house was paid off, and he didn’t want his son to worry about how he was going to pay for his education. This father purchased a 20 year term life policy, which costs him only $15/month.

I also recently spoke to a single mom, who loves her family dearly, she is protecting them with three insurance policies. One on herself for $50,000 and one on each of her children protecting their future insurability. The cost for all three policies only $22/month total!

Life Insurance that is affordable isn’t for young parents and kids only. A $10,000 whole life policy on a 55-year-old woman who is fairly healthy only costs $22/month or a $25,000 whole life policy for a 65-year-old man who is fairly healthy costs $122/month. Now what has to be present are four things for a catastrophic ground cover collapse to be applicable and to actually be able to be paid out on your insurance. All four elements have to be present. These elements are:

1. There has to be an abrupt collapse of the ground cover.

2. There has to be a depression in the ground cover that is clearly visible by the naked eye.

3. There must be structural damage to the building, including the foundation. So just because there is a hole in your lawn, that does not cover it. Because we are only insuring the home itself.

4. The insured structure has to be condemned by the appropriate authorities in that community.

If those four things happen, then you have a sinkhole, and your policy will cover you. Now, what’s most often misunderstood is that there is an endorsement that is possible for you and it is called Sinkhole Endorsement. That’s for if these things weren’t present but you might see the start of step cracking along your block or you have a crack inside your house on your dry wall. That would be covered under the sinkhole endorsement, but not many policies in Florida are offering that anymore.

So you’re going to have to be mindful. If you have the option to get the sinkhole coverage, you might want it. Often times the insurance companies will require you to have a sinkhole inspection done before they offer it to you. This might be something to consider getting.
