Hurricane season has arrived! The good news is that it looks like Tropical Storm Erika is weakening. However this doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be prepared in the event that it hits us harder then we expect.

Below are some tips you might find helpful to prepare your families and homes should Tampa experience an impact from Tropical Storm Erika or any future severe storm.

STAY SAFE!Hurricane/Tropical Storm Preparedness Tips

BEFORE THE STORM

Have a family emergency and communications plan.

Build an emergency kit. Consider some of the following in your kit.

3-day supply of water (one gallon per person, per day)

3-day supply of non-perishable food

first-aid kit

battery-powered radio

flashlight

extra batteries

credit card and cash

special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members

prescription and non-prescription medication

Prepare to secure your home. Purchase materials to protect your home (i.e. plywood, sandbags, etc.)

Determine your evacuation route.

Trim trees and shrubs to prevent them from causing damage to your home.

Don’t forget about your pets. Consider locating pet-friendly lodging should you need to evacuate.

DURING THE STORM

Stay informed. Frequently listen to radio or TV for official announcements of the storm’s progress.

Follow all instructions issued by local officials. Leave immediately if you are ordered to do so.

Plan to evacuate if you live in a mobile home, along the coastline or near a river or other potential flood zone, or in a high rise building as hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations. Notify friends or family members outside the affected area of your evacuation plans.

If staying home, unplug small appliances, turn the refrigerator to maximum cold and keep it closed, and fill the bathtub and large containers with water in case clean tap water is unavailable.

Stay indoors during the storm and stay away from windows and glass doors. Stay in a small interior room, closet or hallway on the lowest level floor.

Be alert for tornadoes as they are often spawned by severe storms.

The calm “eye” of the storm – don’t be fooled. It may seem that the storm is over, but once the eye passes, winds will pick up again.

AFTER THE STORM

Keep listening for the latest updates.

If you evacuated, do not return home until officials say it is safe.

Do not drive unless necessary. Avoid blocked or flooded roadways.

Inspect your home for damage only using a flashlight. Do not use a candle or open flame.

Wear proper shoes to prevent cutting your feet on debris.

Avoid walking in areas with downed power lines to avoid electrocution.

Do not drink or prepare food with tap water until officials say it is safe for consumption.

Never use generators indoors.

Many people wonder why their insurance company cares so much about their roof.

Here is the deal. The roof is what really holds the whole house together. So how it connects to the walls matters greatly. Insurance companies give a lot of credits if you have a wind mitigation form and an inspection done. They will also give you a lot of credits if you have clips and wraps over just having toe nails.

That’s how the roof is literally attached to your walls. Also, if you have bolts that are securing your roof all the way down to the foundation, that is going to be the best support because when the wind blows (we get hurricanes here in Florida) those bolts are going to help hold the roof on.

As long as the roof is held on, then your house is going to be held together. Also, insurance companies don’t like to see patches in your roof, they don’t like to see different colors, or your shingles starting to peel up because all those things are signs of lack of structural integrity.

I was down in Port Charlotte right after a couple of hurricanes hit a couple years back and I could tell the difference between a home that had clips over a home that had just toe nails. I could see the new building codes that had been established because those homes were left standing and their roofs were intact.. Other houses were absolutely destroyed because they did not have the newer code, wraps, clips, or bolts that help hold their house together.

So, if you are having to get your roof redone or building a new home, really consider investing and getting those add ons done: clips or wraps. It’s going to go a long way to help reduce your homeowners insurance cost.

Have a good one out there and be prepared for when that wind blows!

It can be very dangerous to drive through standing water, not only can you do major damage to your vehicle including flooding your engine, you can also be swept away. It only takes about 2 feet of flowing water to float a vehicle.

Currently Tropical Storm Andrea has brought about 3 inches of rainfall, with it expecting to continue.

Parts Bayshore Blvd in Tampa have been closed, and many other low areas can have some pretty major flooding.

If you have a claim or question of what you should do please contact the Most Insurance Agency, and we look forward to helping you. 813-347-5555, our Claims Advocates are standing by to assist our clients with any claims.

2013 hurricane Predictions are in and its predicated to be an above average season…

The Colorado State University team who makes the Hurricane Predictions are predicting an above-average Atlantic basin hurricane season with 18 named storms and about a 72% chance one will make landfall somewhere along the entire Eastern seaboard.

Four of those are expected to be major hurricanes, by major they mean with winds greater than 111 MPH. That is faster than the best baseball pitchers can pitch.

It would seem that there is not an El Nino event this year, which I have to be honest I never really understand, maybe someone can help explain that one.

The Colorado State University team is predicting a 48 % chance that a major hurricane will make landfall in Florida.

The hurricane season begins June 1, and runs all the way till November 30th. You will remember that Super Storm Sandy started off as a major hurricane and made landfall on October 22, 2012. While very late season storms are not as common, they do seem to be very catastrophic. In-fact 90% of all Atlantic hurricane activity takes place during the months of August, September, and October, with the most active dates landing between August 25th-September 25th. So you may be asking how accurate are these predictions, well in one report I read and I quote…

“Meteorologists are known to be absolutely brilliant at after-the-fact explanation of weather phenomena… but please don’t press us too hard on future events!!”

3 tips to help make sure you are prepared on the insurance side of things in case these predictions pan out:

Make sure you are adequately insured with both hazard insurance, and Flood insurance.

Deal with an independent insurance agency who specializes in helping their clients with insurance claims. At Most Insurance we have created a one of a kind Claims Advocate position to help hold the hands of our clients throughout the claims process.

Do a full innovatory of your home. Know Your Stuff is a great free app for helping keep track of all your stuff. This is very helpful if there was a claim.
