Back to School Safety Tips Every Child Should Know

1. Always cross the street at crosswalks.
Because children are short, a car may not see them when speeding down the street. Always make sure your child knows to cross only at designated cross walks when the light or crossing guard directs them to. This way all traffic is yielded to them.

2. Obey the bus rules, especially the arm guard rules.
Go over the bus rules such as staying in your seat and using inside voices. Be sure to stress that no one should ever walk in front of a bus when the arm guard is down since the driver will not be able to see them and they risk being hit.

3. Remind them about strangers.
Not all strangers are bad, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Remind your child to never talk to strangers, and never accept a ride from a stranger EVER. Remind them that people may try to fool them into getting in the car, but that you will never authorize a stranger to come pick them up. Pick a code word you can use in the event that you send another person to come and get them.

4. Review important phone numbers.
If your child will be home alone be sure to go over important phone numbers for the police station, fire station, 911, non-emergency numbers, and numbers to a neighbor nearby who can help if there is a problem.

5. Remind them who they can trust.
Reassure them that there are people they can come talk to when scared. Parents of friends, teachers, school staff, a trusted neighbor, etc. are all helpful should a scary situation arise.

1. In the case of your pet getting loose, be sure your pet has proper identification; a tag or a chip.

2. Take your dog for a walk early. Giving them a chance to potty and get some exercise before the festivities begin.

3. Keep fireworks away from pets. The noise may spook them or firework sparks could accidentally burn them.

4. As much as you love to bring your pet along, loud crowds and firework displaces are not fun for dogs. It may be best to leave them home.

5. Make sure when leaving your pet at home all the windows are securely closed and shades are down. It may help to turn on some music to help drown out fireworks noise.

6. Be sure your dog has his favorite toy and some treats to keep him occupied.

7. If your pet is prone to anxiety or your not sure how they will react to fireworks, consider staying home with them.

8. If your dog is extremely anxious you might consult your vet about giving a mild sedative to help keep him calm.

After warming-up before the 1st and 9th innings, BJ throws the ball into the outfield stands just before the start of the innning. After a few seasons of not catching a ball, my daughter was ready to try something different to see if she could catch one of the “warm up” balls. Late last season she decided she would make some posters to hold up for BJ, each inning when he took the field and when he was at bat. She also has to pet and feed the rays, play on the playgrounds, color and other important baseball activities at each game, so she misses a few opportunities to celebrate her favorite player. We started taking the signs late last season and now to all our games this year.

I think he remembered the signs and the little girls who were holding them as they screamed and cheered, because he threw the ball our direction a few times over the last few games. Finally last week we were able to catch one among the crowd. My 6 year old daughter took the ball into Kindergarten for show and tell the next morning and now it sits in her room, a prize from her favorite player.

BJ, thank you very much; you have a big cheering crowd in section 147 and you made my daughter’s night!

Not Safe Driving

When it is time to finally let your kid drive you can be a nervous wreck. I know that Diana in our office is worried sick over her son who is about to drive. If you live in Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, or almost anywhere in Florida there are good reasons to be concerned. Did you know that Tampa has been listed the deadliest Metro Area in America for teen drivers? Did you know that Orlando, and then Jacksonville are number 2 and 3? So I know that your inclination is to not let your child drive. But eventually they are going to have to drive. And if you don’t sit down and give them proper guidelines, and help teach them, they’ll learn from one of their friends, and let me tell you, you don’t want that.

Teens crash for many reasons, but the most common are overconfidence, speeding, impaired driving, distraction and inexperience. In addition, seat belt use among teens is the lowest of any age group on the road.

In the United States, teens (17 to 20 years of age) are involved in 15% of crashes, but in Florida they are involved in a shocking 22% of crashes! Recent statistics from the Florida Transportation Institute show that motor vehicle crashes are now the #1 killer of teens in America, and while crashes account for only 2% of all deaths nationwide, they account for a surprising 70% of teen injury deaths. Speed, distraction, fatigue and inexperience, coupled with a lack of seat belt use, are all prevalent factors in these fatal crashes.

This contract lays out what a teen has to do to be able to drive, and helps set some parameters, and the contract lays out what the parents will allow the teen do if they meet the criteria. Did you need rental car insurance coverage?

1. Who are you insured by?
Insurance carriers give different amounts of coverage, some give you everything you  need, some will cover everything except the rental car’s loss of rental, which can be a sizable amount.

2. Where are you going?
Some companies will give coverage as long as you stay in the United States but if you travel to Canada, or Mexico you have no coverage.  Also most companies do not give coverage in other countries, typically if you are traveling out of the country alway purchase coverage.

3. What is the use of the rental car?
Is it for business or pleasure, a lot of times people will rent a car for business or put it on a business like credit card, but if it is for business purposes it is rare that you will have coverage no matter what extended from your personal car insurance.  

4. What Credit Card do you use?
Some Credit Card companies will give you full coverage if you use their card for the rental car.  One example in many instances, again not always best to check your card holder agreement, but American Express often will extend coverage.
